Politics should be a space for ideas, not insults. But today, we’re seeing more harassment, threats, and toxic debate, especially online. This creates unsafe conditions for elected officials and discourages people, particularly women and diverse candidates, from running for office.
That’s why I’m asking Richmond Hill Council to support my motion to adopt the Elect Respect pledge. It’s a commitment to civility, safety, and inclusive participation. We must treat others with respect, reject personal attacks, and focus debate on policies, not people.
Members of the public also have a vital role to play. Respect and civility aren’t just expectations for elected officials, they’re shared responsibilities in every democratic space, from council chambers to comment sections.
By modeling integrity and calling on authorities to protect officials facing threats, we can help restore trust in our democratic process. I encourage fellow councillors, organizations, and residents to join me in signing the pledge at electrespect.ca.
I’ve submitted a motion supporting the Elect Respect Campaign, which will be presented to Council at the Committee of the Whole on October 8th.
Regards,
Councillor Carol Davidson
